Kinesio Taping (KT)

The team at Reach Therapy Center includes therapists trained in Kinesio Taping (KT).

Kinesio Taping is
  • A therapeutic taping method using a uniquely designed elastic tape
  • It enhances the function of many different tissues and physiologic systems
  • It is applied and worn for extended periods with continued therapeutic benefit between clinical visits.

We use KT in conjunction with Neuro-developmental treatment (NDT) for children with neurological conditions like cerebral palsy, hemiplegia, and other neuromuscular and orthopaedic conditions leading to difficulties in movement, posture and gait abnormalities. Research supports that KT favourably impacts fine and gross motor abilities and thus, functional independence in ADL, sitting/standing control and balance.

Kinesio Taping can be used to

  • Facilitate/inhibit movement patterns and muscle use
  • Gross motor function
  • Increase stability
  • Prevent injury and promote good circulation and healing
  • Improve functional alignment and posture.

Kinesio Taping helps by

  • Facilitating the body’s natural healing process
  • Activating weak muscles thus, improving force generation
  • To help relax an overused muscle which helps reduce pain and swelling
  • Increasing proprioceptive feedback
  • Prolonging the benefits of manual therapy administered within the clinical setting
  • Functional independence in activities of daily living

How does it work?

  • By targeting different receptors within the somatosensory system it helps by microscopically lifting the skin.
  • This lifting effect forms convolutions in the skin, thus increasing interstitial space and allowing for a decrease in inflammation of the affected areas.

Assessment is the key to effective treatment from a Kinesio Taping application as well as any other treatment. This assessment should include

  • Manual muscle testing
  • Range of motion testing
  • Gait analysis
